Believe(r) in the Process

Blessings fam,

It was the day after Thanksgiving 2017 when I sat down with Brozart, a music producer in Nashville. We were meeting for a quick write session, and I say quick write because I had about an hour before I had to leave. I needed to meet up with my church to serve dinner at The Salvation Army.
We made small talk before he asked me what I wanted to do and I, in typical fashion stated, “I mean, I’m down for whatever.” No lie, I was nervous! Lol, Brozart was the homie, but we had never “officially” worked on anything creative together. He played a few tracks and then said, “I have this one track that already has a hook.”
I said, “Okay, let’s hear it.”
He played the beat and we were both vibing to it. We let the beat play for a few minutes before we both began jotting down notes. An hour later, we were recording a rough voice note of the way the song was supposed to go. I left, sprained ankle and all (totally different story lol) and made my way back to my city.

A few days later I received a call from Trisha Alicia (Nashville recording artist), who was the writer of the hook and she said she wanted the whole song.
“…but it’s a rap song.” I said
She responded, “I’ll srap it.” Srap= sing rap
I said, “OK,” interested it to see how it would sound.
What started out as a random write session became the recipe for Believer (click for lyric video), a feel good anthem proclaiming one’s commitment to the freedom granted through God and the love of Christ.

At the beginning of each year, my Sanager and I sit down to talk about yearly goals. One of my goals in 2016 was to have a song out in 2017. (Which manifested itself in a poetry feature on a song called Faith Walk. If you search Komplex Simplicity on spotify, it’ll pop up 2:43-3:16). So, 2017 I wanted to go bigger.

Poetry is such a huge part of my life, so yes, even though I wanted these things I wasn’t ACTIVELY pursuing a way for me to achieve what I spoke. But God! Always aligning and positioning me in situations and around people who increase my creativity and drive.

I said all that to say this, yes I was a little reckless in only saying what I desired and not having a plan, but you have to start somewhere!

Say what you’re afraid to want outloud.
Write it down.
Make it real.

If it’s supposed to be yours then it will be, because nothing can stop you from what already belongs to you! (But frfr you still need to work for what you desire, because you’re still expected to perform.)

God will manifest our desires in ways that we couldn’t even imagine and for this I will always believe in His process!

Anyway, I love you all! And to my friend who embarked on a new journey this week… I believe the God in you! You have so much to offer the world, go be great! I leave you all with this…

John 14: 12-14 CSB
“Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Thanks again, God bless and One love.

Tell Me I Can’t (I dare you!)

Blessings fam,

If you’re anything like me, you took one look at this title and said, tell me I can’t do what? A large part of my life, (well maybe not large), has been pushed by people telling me what I can’t do. Wait… what? Let me explain.

Over two years ago, I was coming off a fast and I randomly said, “I think I’m not going back to meat.” To which someone close to me responded under their breath, “yeah, we’ll see how long that lasts.”
I made a semi-conscious effort to not eat meat, (I say semi because the habit had already been broken), for about six months. Before I knew it, it was simply my lifestyle.

Actually, the beginning of this blog in 2015 was a reaction to much of the same. I threw out my want to blog and people kind of laughed it off. (That’s why you can’t tell blind people to see your vision, but that’s a topic for another day). At first, I thought it was because they didn’t believe in me, but I really think it’s because they understand (or understood) my need for challenge, opposition, rebelliousness even.

When used for good, it’s extremely healthy and has been a game changer in my life. Most people are motivated by people telling them that they can. I mean, me too, but a carefully placed, “…OK” (read it again with a question mark at the end) and I’m ready to prove everyone wrong. Throwing my energy into getting it done.

Bottom line, tell me I can’t and (if I actually want to), watch me!

So to you reading! If you’re like me, YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING (so do everything)! If you aren’t motivated by reverse psychology (lol) then I believe in you. I believe in your dreams, your goals, and more importantly, your purpose! You have NO IDEA the plans that God has for you and I am beyond excited to see where this life takes you. You are beautiful. You are LOVED!

Anyway, I pray you have a great day and the rest of a blessed week. I love you all and I leave you with this…

Philippians 4:13 CSB
I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.

and

Isaiah 41:10 CSB
Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.

Thanks again, God bless and One love.

Free Read Friyay!

Blessings Fam!

Happy Friyay!!! So this is definitely a Friday freebie. Some of you may have already seen this as it was originally posted on fb by my church fam, but if you haven’t… it’s a pretty good read that I wrote in January, but bc I was fasting from social media (amongst other things) I never posted. Pray you enjoy and have a great weekend. Remember that YOU. ARE. LOVED! K byyyeeeeeee!

“I don’t read the bible because I don’t get it. It’s too hard to understand.”

I hear that often when talking to young believers, and I’m almost certain at one time those words were also floating on the edge of my consciousness begging for an opportunity to come out so someone could help me. I began Google(ing) scriptures, I eventually downloaded an app. I wanted to jot notes, so I ordered a journaling bible making myself believe that if I had one, I’d read it more without being distracted by my notifications going off. It worked for a while, because it was new, and pretty, and I could color the pages not only with markers but with my words. Yet the thing about reading the bible is, if your heart isn’t in it and you aren’t open to understanding, then that desire probably won’t last long.

I (initially) had trouble connecting to the old testament, until I figured out what worked for me. What resonated with the person I am. For me, that was the extent of my imagination. Being able to visualize what I was reading and playing it back in my mind using real world (real time) examples. I imagine walking down the street with a close friend and being separated by chariot and horses of fire. Then watching my friend being taken up in a whirlwind. [2 Kings 2:11] Wait. What? Let me read that again. Trying to identify with how Elisha felt, yet delighted in the strategic magnificence of God…

I remember during a conversation a few years ago someone telling me about how God gave them melodies to scriptures. Where I read words, they heard lyrics and for a season my prayer was that. Not that I’d too hear lyrics but that I’d be able to understand (even more so) in my own way. Enter here my new found love of Psalms. As a lover of poetry, it was shocking to me that I didn’t understand the beauty of Psalms, of Job, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, or Songs of Songs as a collection of wisdom and lyrical writing and worship and philosophical reflection. Yet now that I do, taking that wonder and applying it to other areas of the bible, learning the historical values of the text, diving into the background comes a little easier.

So to those asking where do I start? I can’t answer that for you, but I can suggest that you begin where you find yourself most, where you identify yourself the clearest and allow God’s word to guide you from there.

The bible is big, and vast, and neverending in revelation.

In this time of fasting and prayer and communion with God I pray that God reveals more of Himself to you through the reading and understanding of His word.
Trusting that by leaning on God for understanding, by faith, He will reveal His words to you in a manner that you understand. Amen. I’ll leave you with this…

Proverbs 2:1-6 CSB.
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 listening closely to wisdom
and directing your heart to understanding;
3 furthermore, if you call out to insight
and lift your voice to understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it like hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and discover the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Thanks again, God bless and One love.

Shot Clock

Hey Fam,

I’m going to absolutely skip the awkwardness of explaining why I’ve been gone so long and where I’ve been… Maybe we’ll chat about that next week, but for now, let’s check in about this dwindling shot clock towards the end of the first quarter. At the beginning of the year, it is so easy to make resolutions, plans, and goals. What becomes more difficult is following up on these things. Checking where we are in relation to when we wanted to achieve our goals. In twenty-four days, we reach the end of the first quarter of 2019. So, where are you? Have you started chipping away at your lists, is anything crossed out?

My friends and I are pretty good with holding each other accountable… on every level. Don’t just assume because you threw something random out on group chat that it isn’t going to pop back up a month from now. Since we’re family here I’m doing the same thing!

One of the reasons that I decided to blog today is because a few of you have been holding me accountable. Asking questions like, “when are you going to be blogging again? When is your next book coming out?” While I could continue in the abstract or speak out now about everything, I’m also learning that not everything needs to be explained. Some things just need to be seen. That being said, I have some pretty major goals this year and while I’m holding them pretty close to home, I feel confident in letting you in on one…I will release an e-book later this year…

Can I share with you my biggest challenge?
PROCRASTINATION.
I’m not in the market for a new best friend, but with the way that thing keeps hanging around you’d think we signed pacts with each other. I’m not amused! Exactly the opposite in fact. I spend a good chunk of my day listening to ministries via the web, podcast, reading books, and pretty much avoiding anything that looks like editing…

but there’s something about being exposed that forces you to see what has always been in front of you.

So can I encourage you today?
Whatever you need to complete that feels big, shift your perspective until it looks and feels small. Work on it in chunks and never stop moving forward! Stagnation, procrastination, and fear are dream killers and we don’t accept that here!

Walk boldly into the areas of your life that you want to conquer and remember that you CANNOT fail at your purpose. You are so very loved!

I’m excited to see what you make happen this quarter and this year! Email me, message me, dm me (lol) all of the great things you are doing and I’d love to support. As always, I pray that you all have been great! I hope you have a great week & I’ll leave you with this…

1 Corinthians 15:58 CSB
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Thanks again, God bless and One love.

P.s. in basketball you have 24 seconds on the shot clock before the ball falls out of your possession. That’s where the Inspo for this title came from. K. Byeeeee lol

Remember 2015?

Hey Fam!

So today I looked at the calendar… and while that in itself is not a post worthy experience, it made me realize that today, 3 years ago, I published my first blog post! Some of you have been with me since the beginning and others have hopped on along this rollercoaster of a journey. Together we have share many memories and you were even along for the ride when I published my first book!

I truly appreciate you all!

While I’ve pretty much been quiet this whole year, it’s not because I’ve been ignoring you, it’s because I’ve been working! Life is taking me to unexpected things… God is taking me unexpected places and while I’d LOVE to share those places and things with you, I need to understand them myself first! Pray for my clarity (lol)

I won’t hold you, I simply wanted to say thanks for rocking with me!

Anyway, I love you all and I pray that you have a wonderful Sunday evening and Monday morning! I leave you with this…

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NLT
1 For everything there is a season,
a time for every activity under heaven.
2 A time to be born and a time to die.
A time to plant and a time to harvest.
3 A time to kill and a time to heal.
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
4 A time to cry and a time to laugh.
A time to grieve and a time to dance.
5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.
A time to embrace and a time to turn away.
6 A time to search and a time to quit searching.
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
7 A time to tear and a time to mend.
A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
8 A time to love and a time to hate.
A time for war and a time for peace.

Thanks again, God bless and One love.
