The Iceberg Effect

iceberg

Hey Fam,

It’s Monday! I pray you all had a great weekend!… My weekend was exhausting and incredible at the same time…

So today I want to tackle something I’d like to call, “The Iceberg Effect.” Sometimes we come across an individual or individuals who have something we want or something we believe we deserve. Cars, clothes, money, house, relationships etc. People are sort of like icebergs in the sense that, what you see on top is a small fraction of everything that’s below. So when envy/jealousy begins to brew, what exactly are you envious of? Their many failures, their years of struggle, the hundreds of no’s before they finally heard a yes or is it the self doubt they had to swallow every 5 hours.

When we look at someone, we typically only see what that person allows us to see. And generally, everyone puts their best face forward… but what about that pseudo-happiness hiding behind that smirk. Or the pain lingering behind the warmth in their eyes… oh my bad, envious individuals probably didn’t notice anything past their envy.

The funny thing is, you aren’t even jealous of someone else. You’re jealous of their struggle wrapped in God’s strength… because ultimately, you have no idea what they had to go through to get where they are… don’t let the appearance of someone else’s life stop you from appreciating what you have in yours.

If you woke up this morning, with your first breath thank God and carry on. Don’t use your second breath to complain and/or think about the things that you don’t have… really it’s counterproductive.

Anyway, I love you all, I hope that didn’t come off as judgmental (that’s not what I was going for), and I pray that you all have a blessed week and I leave you with this…

James 3:13-16 NLT

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

Before I go, it would be remiss of me to not share that this Friday night at 7pm, I’ll be at City of David… 1790 Woodlawn Road for their Friday Night Live Spoken Word. I’d love to see you there!

Thanks again, God bless and One love.
